Teso-Karamoja Corporate Clubs to Plant Over 10,000 Trees in Environmental Sustainability Drive

As the Teso-Karamoja Corporate League gears up to kick off its 2025 edition, the organization has unveiled a major environmental initiative aimed at planting over 10,000 trees across the Teso and Karamoja regions.
This bold move is part of a broader campaign to promote environmental sustainability and combat the pressing effects of climate change in the area.
Speaking during a press briefing held at Airiamet Coffee Shop, Mendera Olelema, the Director of the Teso-Karamoja Corporate League, announced that the games will officially begin on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Soroti Sports Grounds.
The league matches will be held on the first Sunday of each month, rotating through various districts in the region.
Founded in 2018, Teso-Karamoja Corporate Clubs is a registered, non-profit organization in Uganda that has consistently promoted corporate networking through sports such as football, volleyball, and netball.
Its main goal is to foster community development through organized corporate social responsibility and physical engagement.
Dr. Daniel Ogwal, Chairperson of the Teso-Karamoja Corporate Clubs, recalled the league’s growth from 12 corporate teams in its first edition in 2018 to 20 teams in the last edition.
This year, more than 25 teams are expected to participate, including past competitors like Eastern Legends Corporate Club, Serere Corporate Club, Prisons, UBA, NWSC, UMEME, and St. Stephen SS.
Eligibility for the league requires clubs to be fully subscribed annually, as outlined in Article Three of the corporate constitution.
Participating teams must not include active players in FIFA or FUFA leagues, and all players must be at least 30 years old.
The theme for the 2025 edition is “Promoting Environmental Sustainability in the Teso-Karamoja Regions.”
Organizers are rallying behind the cause as a response to rising climate-related challenges, including extreme heat surpassing 45°C, recurrent droughts and floods, crop failure, road destruction, and widespread pollution from plastic waste.
“We are already aware our environment is under attack and we are experiencing high climate change, the effects of environmental degradation and we are experiencing low crop yields because of drought or flooding, destruction of roads because of floods, pollution by polythene bags all over the environment that’s why we are coming as corporates with practices that promote environmental sustainability and prevent environmental destruction,” he stated
Dr. Ogwal emphasized that the environmental campaign will be executed through four major drives:
Tree Planting Drive: Aimed at planting 10,000 trees to mitigate rising temperatures and promote reforestation.
- Clean Environment Drive: Involving the collection of polythene bags and plastic bottles to reduce litter and pollution.
- Education Drive: Designed to sensitize the public on the harmful effects of environmental degradation and pollution.
- Health Drive: Involving blood donation to boost supply at Soroti Blood Bank, connecting health with environmental wellness.
The league will also harness its wide network of corporate participants to raise awareness about sustainable practices such as safe disposal of plastics and promoting community-led tree planting efforts.
Dr. Ogwal called on the public, corporate partners, and development organizations to join in and support this noble drive.
“We know our environment is under attack. Now is the time for action,” he stated. “Together, as corporates and communities, we can be the change that restores and protects our environment
