Serere MP Omoding: Farming is the Key to Ending Poverty in Teso
Serere County Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Omoding, has emphasized that the key to eradicating poverty in the Teso region lies in agriculture.
Omoding’s remarks came during President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s visit to the farm of Joseph Ijaala, a successful farmer in Serere District, who has become an exemplary figure for many in the area.
Ijaala, who farms on just 2.5 acres of land, reportedly generates an impressive annual income of 608 million Ugandan shillings from his agricultural activities.
His success has proven that with proper knowledge, dedication, and investment, even small-scale farmers can achieve remarkable financial success.
Omoding praised Ijaala’s efforts, stating that the farmer’s example should inspire others, particularly young entrepreneurs, to venture into agriculture.
“This farmer has shown us that with just a few acres of land, two or four, you can become a multi-millionaire. I think Ijaala has put in a lot of hard work and commitment, and for our young people, this is a very important lesson,” Omoding said.
He also highlighted his own farming experiences, noting that agriculture has the potential to transform the economy and provide sustainable livelihoods for the people of Teso.
Omoding further emphasized that food security would be the next major commodity in high demand globally, making farming not only a viable means of personal wealth creation but also an essential pillar for the future of the region and the nation.
“As I said during World Food Day, the next mineral that is going to be on high demand is food. If we focus on farming, we can lift ourselves out of poverty and ensure food security for our people,” Omoding concluded.
President Museveni’s visit to Ijaala’s farm serves as a reminder of the power of agriculture as a tool for socio-economic transformation in Uganda, especially in rural areas like Teso.
